Renewing, faith, hope, and intentionality to support stable, happy, and thriving families
"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world" ~James 1:27
"You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, defending the fatherless and the oppressed so that mere earthly mortals will never again strike terror." ~Psalms 10:17 - 18
What is the Family Life Counsel program?
My Life Counsel (MLC), a 501c3 organization, answers God's call to serve our community’s forgotten, broken, widows, orphans, abandoned, and those in crisis, through the Family LIfe Counsel program. Families in crisis, who were previously financially unable, are now able to receive immediate free professional faith-based face-to-face family counseling, parent/child educational training, and family group therapy.
Family Life Counsel is a family program aimed to support foster, kinship, adoption, and in crisis families within the Marion County community. This program is developed by My Life Counsel (MLC) to prevent and stabilize mental/behavioral related issues as it relates to foster, adoption, kinship families as well as at-risk children and teens. Counselors use the tools from proven researched method strategies such as Trust-Based Relational Interventions (TBRI), Making Sense of Your Worth, and the Arno Profile System/Temperament to create customized, effective parenting/caregiving plans for each family.
The Family Life Counsel program utilizes a curriculum from Evidenced-Based Practices (EBPs). Among other benefits, these EBPs have been proven to strengthen the overall health and well-being within the family dynamics of these families in crisis. Using this strategy will strengthen the marriage and sibling relationship that is strained by traumatized children.
Financial burdens and timely scheduling are the two most common barriers in crisis counseling. Family LIfe Counsel hopes to eliminate both of these obstacles by offering rapid by phone intakes and free therapy services. The My Life counsel program could allow for an in-crisis family to be in front of an experienced counselor no later than 72-hours (sooner than 24-hours in most cases).
The Aim of Family Counseling
We believe that each child is a true blessing! The Family LIfe Counsel program's aim is to equip parents with positive parenting strategies designed to support families. This goal is accomplished through counseling, education, and training. As children grow, family dynamics shift causing unique circumstances and challenges. Our experienced counselors come alongside families in their time of need. Through family counseling, families will be provided assessments that explain their individual needs for strategic parenting. Parents will be equipped with their child's specific need for love and affection, communication, motivation, decision making, and much more. The primary goal is to equip parents with positive parenting strategies and is designed to support families in crisis.
Family Therapy and Interventions
Temperament Therapy is derived from the “Theory of Temperament” which states that God places within every person the emotional characteristics necessary to accomplish His plan and purpose for their life. Research indicates that Temperament Therapy is more than ninety percent (93%) successful when administered by a “Certified Temperament Counselor,” trained in this technique. Temperament allows for specific strategies and coping skills for each individual in your family. read more
Trust-Based Relationship Intervention (TBRI) is an evidence-based, trauma-informed intervention. This attachment-rich intervention is designed to meet the unique needs of children who have experienced trauma. Connection is the heart of TBRI. When children feel safe and know they have a voice, their survival behaviors: including lying, stealing, and anger outbursts, are diminished. When TBRI is applied, caregivers spend less time stressfully putting out fires and more time joyfully engaging their children. As a result, these children who desperately needed a sense of self-worth, begin to discover their value. While TBRI was designed for vulnerable children, parents often find this to be the best parenting philosophy for all children. Based on years of research by Dr. Karyn Purvis, Dr. David Cross, and their colleagues at Texas Christian University.
Making Sense of Your Past (Worth) curriculum was developed by Cindy R. Lee, LCSW, and is utilized at HALO Project International. It was the result of several pilot groups consisting of survivors of domestic violence and other groups of foster and adoptive parents. There were significant changes in the self-worth scores of the participants and the women were able to learn and embrace new parenting strategies upon completion of this program.
Counseling, Education, and Training
The Family Life Counsel program strengthens the overall health and well-being within the family dynamics of families of foster, adopted, kinship, trauma, and at-risk children and teens. Using this strategy will strengthen the marriage and sibling relationship that is strained by traumatized children.
